The failure of the Juba Peace Talks and increasing levels of LRA violence prompted new government military efforts. The UPDF launched an attack on LRA bases in the DRC dubbed “Operation Lightening Thunder” (OLT). This was done in cooperation with the governments of southern Sudan, the DRC, and the US. None of the senior LRA leaders targeted for detention were captured. However, the operation did destroy some of the LRA’s camps and resources, effectively scattering combatants across a wider swath of territory, including the CAR.
