Globally, an estimated 300,000 children under the age of 18 participate in combat situations; those in armed groups in particular suffer prolonged exposure to psychological and physical abuse. The Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) is a rebel movement known for its widespread conscription of children; yet little is known about this process once the group moved beyond northern Uganda.

Humanitarian actors have long used the Sphere Handbook and its minimum standards to guide operational practice. The new revision attempts to update these standards partly to address urban crises that have challenged the humanitarian system.

Lauren is the Communications and Outreach Manager at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. Prior to this current assignment, Lauren served as the Assistant Director of Global Markets with Harvard Business School’s Executive Education and prior to that the Program Manager of Harvard Business School’s Global Initiative.

Michael is the Project Coordinator for KoBoToolbox at the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. In this role he provides general project coordination, manages the KoBo user support team, aides in partnership management with partner humanitarian organizations, and acts as the UX/UI designer for new and improved KoBoToolbox features.

Brendan Kelley joined the HHI team in September 2018 as the Project and Administrative Coordinator. In this role, Brendan facilitates various administrative and financial duties including the hiring and onboarding of employees; travel arrangements for HHI employees; and financial support for team managers and leadership.
