Past Programs

Earthquake in Haiti

Beginning a mere 48 hours after the earthquake struck Haiti, HHI maintained a presence of technical assistance and knowledge-building from January-November 2010. HHI's involvement included managing the Harvard-wide response in the immediate aftermath of the earthquake, opening the HHI-Love a Child Disaster Recovery Center, overseeing the field hospital Klinik Lespwa, and providing public health education and training to the Hatiain community.

The Burden of War

This program focused on identifying the myriad direct and indirect consequences of war for civilians. By advancing scholarship on the social, economic, and psychological impact of war on civilian populations, HHI developed informed understanding on when and how to act on behalf of people in danger. Research focused on Darfur, Sudan, and Chad, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Angola and Lebanon.

Intercommunal Violence and Reconciliation

Through both private and public dialogue, this project aimed to help improve relationships between communities and countries with relationships long-stalled following violence. The project's focus was the Armenian-Turkish relationship.

India Portfolio

In order to further understanding of humanitarian crises in India, and consolidate various ongoing research and training initiatives in India, HHI established the India Portfolio. The India Portfolio included the Mumbai Monsoon Project, the VOICES project, MEMEx, and a study on the demographic and humanitarian consequences of the partition of India.
