## Description

HHI’s Program on Gender, Rights and Resilience (GR2) seeks to investigate and address issues relating to gender, peace, and security in fragile states. HHI's network of diverse faculty, fellows, and researchers explore pressing issues that impact the security of women and girls as well as men and boys throughout the world. The goal of this work is to examine the unique vulnerabilities that can be exacerbated by crisis and conflict, including gender-based violence, human trafficking, other forms of exploitation and abuse, and economic insecurity, and to understand the most effective ways to address these issues by elevating the voices of those most affected.

## Current Activities

GR2 continues to work with women’s rights organizations to support collective action around conservation in fragile contexts. This work represents an increasing recognition that fragility is not only a result of natural disasters and war, but also climate change and environmental degradation. Some current research projects include, but are not limited to:

### USAID RISE Challenge

Addressing gender-based violence (GBV), human rights and the environmental degradation associated with artisanal mining in Eastern DRC. [Learn more here](https://www.resource-fulempowerment.com).

### CRCA (Community Resilience in Central Africa)

Longitudinal research study conducted by CRCA that aims to track community outcomes over time in highlighting the links between gender, women’s rights and environmental protection.

### Measuring GBV Risk Mitigation Effectiveness in Emergencies

UNICEF and GR2 have jointly undertaken a project aimed at understanding measures of safety and perceptions of safety related to GBV risk mitigation interventions in humanitarian contexts. This project aims to assess current good and promising practice, identify safe and ethical parameters for measuring the effectiveness of risk mitigation interventions and develop concise and cohesive measurement tools to pilot. [Learn more here](https://gbvguidelines.org/en/im/effectiveness/).

### Due Diligence Research Project

Due Diligence research project that aims to create generalizable knowledge around the individual and community effects of Industry due diligence (DD) programming in the artisanal mining sector.

### Past Webinars

The GR2 program took part in several webinars focused on the Covid-19 Pandemic, including events with the [Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baUq6HmSXu4) and the [Chicago Council on Global Affairs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qGidmJkvtGU).

GR2's Dr. Jocelyn Kelly spoke at webinar on "Intimate Partner Violence and Forced Displacement: From Research to Action" hosted by the World Bank’s Gender Dimensions of Forced Displacement program. ### Methodology expand\_more

The Program on Gender, Rights and Resilience’s investigations inform approaches to reduce the vulnerability of women and girls as well as men and boys in conflict and support community-level resilience strategies. Our program employs a participatory research approach grounded in collaborations with international and local non-governmental organizations and community-based associations. This approach helps us bring the voices of the experts – individuals affected by violence and instability – to practitioners and policy makers to catalyze the development of more effective programming. The program's goal is to translate the knowledge gained from working with affected communities into timely and impactful programming and policy.
