#  Crisis Situation Update: Morocco

 On September 8, a magnitude 6.8 earthquake and several strong aftershocks struck central Morocco, about 46 miles southeast of Marrakech. Recent reports indicate that the earthquake and its aftershocks resulted in the deaths of more than 2,100 people and injured more than 2,400 others as of September 10. The number of recorded casualties will almost certainly increase in the coming days as humanitarian assessments and search-and-rescue operations continue. The earthquakes affected remote, mountainous areas in Morocco that will be difficult for first responders to reach, considering the damage to critical roads and infrastructure.

 Several Moroccan and international search and rescue teams are scaling up operations to reach affected communities and provide emergency assistance. As with all humanitarian emergencies, local humanitarian organizations have been the first on the scene to provide much needed support to affected communities. Moroccan Red Crescent (MRCS) teams were on the ground immediately, coordinating closely with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and local authorities to assess the situation, support search and rescue operations, and provide direct help to affected people. MRCS volunteers are providing first aid, psychosocial support and helping transport injured people to medical facilities. As with many earthquake emergencies, the humanitarian need will long outlast the search and rescue efforts.
